Beloved Ballston Spa Mayor Christine Fitzpatrick Passes Away

UPDATE: The community of Ballston Spa is mourning the loss of former Mayor Christine M. Fitzpatrick, who passed away on November 24, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of public service and unwavering commitment to her community. Fitzpatrick was a beloved figure in Ballston Spa, known for her pioneering work as the town’s first female mayor and her dedication to community enhancement.

Born on April 21, 1950, in Manhattan, New York, Christine was the daughter of Mary and Edward J. Fitzpatrick. She grew up in Queens, surrounded by her five siblings and a large extended family, which played a significant role in shaping her values and community spirit. Christine had a rich educational background, earning her bachelor’s degree in history from St. John’s University and pursuing a master’s degree at George Washington University and Brooklyn College.

Her career spanned various sectors, including education and public service. Fitzpatrick served as an elementary school teacher, worked at the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in Washington D.C., and held the position of vice president of employee benefits at Macy’s, Inc.. Notably, she negotiated health benefit contracts for New York State employees at the Governor’s Office of Employee Relations, showcasing her commitment to advocacy and public welfare.

Christine’s impact on Ballston Spa was profound. During her tenure as mayor, she led the village through a remarkable financial turnaround, transforming a $300,000 deficit into a robust $4.8 million fund balance. Her leadership facilitated substantial investments in vital community services, enhancing the quality of life for all residents. Fitzpatrick was also instrumental in developing accessibility initiatives and fostering citizen engagement, ensuring that community voices were heard.

Loved for her warmth and adventurous spirit, Christine was an avid reader and enjoyed family gatherings, tandem biking, and travel. She maintained meaningful relationships with friends and was known for her heartfelt card messages that touched countless lives. She is survived by her siblings, cherished partner Richard Dautner, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will carry forward her memory.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on December 4, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 167 Milton Ave., Ballston Spa.
