HBO Max is gearing up to expand its original content offerings with the upcoming adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter series and the renewal of the Spanish original series, Furia. During a presentation at the Content London industry event, head of originals Sarah Aubrey highlighted the streaming service’s commitment to enhancing its development slate and reaching broader audiences.
In her remarks, Aubrey noted that when she assumed her role approximately one year ago, the service “really needed more development money.” She expressed enthusiasm for the new season of Furia, which she described as “delightful” and a project close to her heart due to its exploration of women’s rage. The series, created and directed by Félix Sabroso, is set to return for a second season in 2026, featuring both new actresses and several cast members from the previous season.
International Expansion and Content Strategy
The announcement comes as HBO Max prepares for significant international expansion. The service will launch in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein on January 13, 2026. This expansion is part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s strategy to broaden its geographic reach, particularly in large markets where HBO Max content is already available through an exclusive partnership with Comcast’s Sky.
As of the third quarter of 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery reported a total of 128 million streaming subscribers. This growth reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to diversify its content and tap into international markets. The upcoming Harry Potter series, set for a 2026 debut, is anticipated to be a major draw for subscribers.
Aubrey acknowledged the challenges the company has faced during her tenure, including navigating mergers and strategic shifts. She emphasized the importance of patience in the development process, stating, “If you rush something at the development stage, it often ends in heartbreak.”
New Local Originals and Creative Collaborations
In addition to Furia, HBO Max announced several new local original series during the event. These include a docuseries about the late Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida in Italy and a new project from the creative team behind the acclaimed German series Dark. Aubrey also mentioned the introduction of 4 Blocks Zero, a prequel to the award-winning gangster drama 4 Blocks, which has already garnered attention from HBO’s drama chief Francesca Orsi.
When questioned about potential original productions in Australia, Aubrey indicated that there are promising developments underway, but it is still early in the process. She similarly addressed inquiries about microdramas, revealing that her focus is currently on the Harry Potter series, among other high-profile projects.
Aubrey concluded her presentation by expressing her excitement for the Harry Potter adaptation, stating, “It’s such a delightful adaptation of the books. It’s created by a British writer. It’s directed by a British filmmaker. These people are the best that this country has to offer. And I’m so excited for everyone to see it.”
With these developments, HBO Max continues to position itself as a key player in the streaming landscape, promising both familiar favorites and innovative new content to engage a growing global audience.
