In an inspiring display of quick thinking and heroism, a school custodian and a middle school student from Clarksville received accolades for their life-saving actions in a school cafeteria. During a City Council meeting on December 4, 2023, Mayor Joe Pitts presented Life Saver Certificates to lead custodian Stephanie Prusynski and student Murphy Stanger of Kirkwood Middle School.
The incident unfolded when Stanger noticed a fellow student struggling to breathe due to an obstructed airway. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, he immediately sought the assistance of Prusynski, who promptly performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully dislodging the obstruction.
This remarkable event was highlighted during the City Council’s regular session, which served as a platform for the community to honor the bravery demonstrated by both Prusynski and Stanger. Councilman Brian Zacharias, who also teaches at Kirkwood Middle School, detailed the sequence of events to those present, emphasizing the critical role of teamwork in the rescue. “Stanger immediately alerted Prusynski, who administered the Heimlich maneuver, saving the student’s life,” Zacharias stated, underscoring the significance of their swift actions.
The presentation of the Life Saver Certificates drew an enthusiastic response from the audience. As applause filled the council chambers, it became clear that the community’s gratitude was deeply felt. This recognition not only commemorates the extraordinary efforts of Prusynski and Stanger but also serves as a vital reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness.
Prusynski and Stanger’s readiness to act prevented a potential tragedy and showcased the impact that everyday individuals can have in critical moments. Their actions resonate beyond the cafeteria, illustrating the importance of being prepared for emergencies and the life-saving techniques that can make a difference.
The standing ovation from attendees reflected a collective admiration and respect for the courage displayed by these two heroes. Their actions have not only saved a life but have also inspired others in the community to be vigilant and proactive in emergency situations. As Clarksville celebrates this moment, it reaffirms the vital role that all individuals play in ensuring the safety and well-being of their peers.
