Gridley High Football’s Undefeated Season Ends in Heartbreaking Loss

UPDATE: The Gridley High School football team’s remarkable undefeated season came to a devastating halt earlier today, as they lost 28-20 to Lincoln in the CIF Division 6-AA regional final. This heartbreaking defeat marks the end of Gridley’s impressive 13-game winning streak, leaving them with a final record of 13-1.

Gridley initially took the lead in the match but could not maintain their momentum. After scoring first, the Bulldogs fell behind as Lincoln responded with two quick touchdowns, establishing a 14-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. However, Gridley rallied back with two rushing touchdowns from star player Jace Griggs, entering halftime with a slim 20-14 lead.

As the game progressed, critical turnovers proved costly for Gridley. An interception and a fumble in the fourth quarter allowed Lincoln to capitalize, shifting the momentum dramatically. With just six minutes remaining, Lincoln’s Ryan Bernwanger intercepted a pass, setting the stage for quarterback Luca Papoulias to connect with Michael Whitelaw on a stunning 65-yard touchdown pass, flipping the score to 21-20 in favor of Lincoln.

Less than a minute later, Lincoln took full control after recovering a fumble at Gridley’s 17-yard line. Running back Kyan Phillips sealed the Bulldogs’ fate with a 16-yard touchdown run, pushing the final score to 28-20.

This loss ends a season filled with triumph for Gridley, who had previously achieved a perfect regular season record of 10-0 and captured the Northern Section Division III championship. The Bulldogs, featuring a roster of 11 seniors, 16 juniors, 11 sophomores, and just one freshman, have experienced an emotional journey this year.

Lincoln (11-3) now advances to the CIF Division 6-AA championship game, where they will face Valley Center, hoping to continue their successful playoff run.

Fans and supporters of Gridley are left to reflect on a remarkable season that showcased resilience and talent. The Bulldogs will undoubtedly look to regroup and come back stronger next year, building on the lessons learned from this intense playoff battle.

This developing story highlights not only the competitive spirit of high school athletics but also the heart and determination of young athletes who give their all on the field.
