Salvation Army Urgently Needs Toys for 400 Families’ Christmas

URGENT UPDATE: The Salvation Army in San Diego is calling for immediate toy donations to ensure that 400 local families can celebrate Christmas this year. With just one week before distribution begins, the organization is hundreds of toys short of its goal.

At the Salvation Army Kroc Center warehouse, a variety of toys, including basketballs, dolls, and art supplies, are piled high, but they still fall drastically short of what is needed for older children. “Even a Barbie house is something we set aside for families who’ve had a particularly difficult year,” explained Glynis Eckert, the director of marketing for the Kroc Center.

The organization faces a critical shortage, especially for children aged 8 to 12. “The age groups that receive the most donations tend to be younger kids,” said Janet Reade, the director of volunteers and community engagement. “But we need toys for all ages, especially for older children.”

Time is running out. Parents on a pre-registered list will choose toys next week, and the Salvation Army hopes to provide each parent with three to four toys per child. “We want every parent to feel they can give their children a special Christmas,” Eckert added.

If the toy shortage persists, the Salvation Army may have to purchase toys from their own budget, creating a significant financial strain that could hinder their broader mission of spreading holiday joy. “We aim to give families a complete Christmas experience, including toy sacks, gift wrap, and food boxes,” Eckert said.

Donations can be made at the Kroc Center, online, or through monetary contributions. Every little bit helps ensure that families can share the magic of Christmas this year. Click here to donate and make a difference today.
