Battle Mountain Basketball Teams Split as Season Heats Up

UPDATE: The Battle Mountain boys and girls basketball teams are both currently 2-2 as the 2025-2026 season unfolds. In a thrilling comeback, the girls’ team rallied from a 9-point halftime deficit to defeat Soroco 39-36 on Saturday, thanks to Ruthie Casey‘s impressive 15 points. Teammates Amelia Wansley and Kate Kovacik contributed significantly, each adding 10 points to the scoreboard.

Just two days ago, the boys faced a tough challenge against Rifle, falling 45-37 after a dominant 22-point third quarter from the opposition. Despite the loss, Izzy Kovacik led the Huskies with 17 points, while Casey supported with 16 points. As the Huskies look to improve, they will host Middle Park at home on Thursday night.

The boys’ season kicked off with a 76-50 loss against Coal Ridge, but they bounced back with a 60-47 victory over Lake County on December 12, followed by a 58-47 win against DSST: Cedar the next day. Jackson Wansley has been a key player, scoring 10, 14, and 15 points in the first three games.

In nearby Eagle Valley, the boys’ basketball team is thriving with a record of 5-1, following a recent victory against Caprock Academy where sophomore Daniel Anderson shone with 19 points. Meanwhile, the Eagle Valley girls team holds a 2-4 record but showed promise with a 44-22 win over Weld Central earlier this month and a recent 34-14 victory over Steamboat Springs.

Both teams are back in action soon, with the Eagle Valley girls set to face Grand Junction on Wednesday night and Moffat County on Thursday.

As the season progresses, fans are eager to see how both Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley will adapt and improve.
