UPDATE: A tragic accident has left one man dead following a collision between a Metrolink train and a vehicle near Camarillo, California, on December 18. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed the incident occurred around 2 p.m. when Metrolink Train 118 struck a Honda Ridgeline truck on the tracks, resulting in a fatality.
Authorities report that an elderly man, the driver of the truck, was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle was registered to a residence in Port Hueneme, but further details about the victim have not been released.
Meredith Yeoman, public relations manager for Metrolink, stated that there were no injuries reported among the 14 passengers aboard the train at the time of the collision. The train remained at the scene for investigation as of 5 p.m. PST.
As a result of the crash, multiple Metrolink trains experienced cancellations, disrupting service in the area. Traffic conditions have also been impacted, with Fifth Street closed between Las Posas and Pleasant Valley to facilitate the ongoing investigation.
This incident is part of a troubling trend, as there have been other fatal crashes involving trains and vehicles this year, raising questions about safety measures at crossings.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
