Vallejo Museum Celebrates Holiday Spirit with Annual Teddy Bear Tea

The Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum hosted its annual Teddy Bear Tea and Cookies event on December 9, 2023, attracting families eager to embrace the holiday spirit. Over the years, this festive gathering has evolved into a cherished tradition for many, comparable to holiday staples such as decorating a tree or watching classic films.

Rebbeca Ferguson brought her two sons, aged 11 and 9, to the event, sharing her enthusiasm: “Oh yeah, they love it, and it’s become a tradition because we’re all still kids at heart.” Her sons, Radley and T-Rex, embraced the occasion by dressing up as an elf and a reindeer, respectively, embodying the festive atmosphere that permeated the venue.

Trevor Allen, the museum’s executive director, expressed his commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all attendees. “Everything we do is about community — that’s what this museum is about,” he stated. Under his leadership, the event has become a safe space for families to gather and enjoy holiday traditions.

Long-time volunteer Suzane Harrington-Cole has been instrumental in the event’s success for the past decade. She shared her love for the young attendees, particularly those experiencing Santa Claus for the first time. “For me, this event is the start of Christmas. It’s where we all come together, no matter our color or our size,” she explained.

The Teddy Bear Tea has transformed over the years. Originally, children played with teddy bears displayed around the museum, but the valuable collectibles needed to be safeguarded. Now, they are kept in a case for admiration rather than play. Children attending the event receive more than just a teddy bear; they also take home a free book, courtesy of Alibi Bookshop, located nearby.

In addition to the usual festivities, this year featured a new performance by the Magical Moonshine Theater, which presented “Puppy Locks and the Three Bears,” delighting the young audience. The presence of Santa and Mrs. Claus, portrayed once again by Thomas Bilbo and Francean Larsen, added to the enchantment of the day. Larsen commented, “Giving back to the community and making them happy? That’s the best part.”

A popular highlight was the distribution of free gifts. Initially reserved for pre-registered attendees, the initiative expanded thanks to Angels With Heart, ensuring every child received a wrapped present. “No matter what, on Christmas morning, we will have a gift that nobody knows what it is,” Ferguson noted with a smile.

Ferguson has attended the Teddy Bear Tea for several years, praising the variety of activities available. “The museum and Angels With Heart do such an amazing job,” she remarked. The event not only provides entertainment with Santa, books, music, and dancing but also offers educational opportunities as families explore the exhibits within the museum.

Vallejo, often overshadowed by negative headlines, shines brightly during the holiday season. Events like the Teddy Bear Tea and the Mad Hatter celebration showcase the city’s ability to foster community spirit and joy. As the festivities continue, many families are likely to return year after year, keeping the spirit of togetherness alive in Vallejo.
