Police Kill Man Armed with Box Cutter in Queens Shooting

URGENT UPDATE: A police shooting in Queens has left a man dead after he allegedly charged at officers with a box cutter early on Sunday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 12:25 a.m. on December 21, 2023, at 1170 Nameoke St. in Far Rockaway, according to NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera.

Officers from the 101st Precinct responded to a 911 call about a domestic dispute involving a father and his son. Upon arrival, police attempted to locate the 29-year-old son inside the apartment but were unable to do so. As they exited the apartment with the parents, the officers encountered the man in the hallway, armed with a box cutter.

Chief Rivera stated that officers issued multiple verbal commands for the man to drop the weapon, but he refused to comply. “The male was observed in the hallway outside of the apartment with a box cutter in his hand,” Rivera said. “The officers attempted to deescalate the situation, but the male did not comply with the demands to drop the weapon.”

As tensions escalated, the father retreated behind the officers. According to Rivera, as the son charged at the police, one officer deployed a Taser while another opened fire. The suspect was struck and subsequently fell to the ground.

Responding officers performed CPR until EMS arrived and transported the man to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The police officers involved were evaluated at a local hospital but reported no injuries.

“This incident once again demonstrates the dangers that our police officers face every day,” Rivera added. “A routine call can quickly escalate into an extremely dangerous situation.”

The NYPD Force Investigation Division is currently examining the case. This developing story highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces during domestic calls and the potential for violence in seemingly ordinary situations.
