Arizona Salvation Army Faces $775,000 Shortfall as Holidays Approach

The Salvation Army’s Southwest Division is currently facing a significant funding gap of $775,000 as it approaches the conclusion of its annual Red Kettle campaign in Arizona. With a fundraising target of $2.3 million, officials are urging the public to contribute before the campaign officially ends on Christmas Eve.

As the campaign enters its final days, the organization is calling on donors to help bridge this financial shortfall. Scott Johnson, the division’s public relations director, expressed optimism about reaching the goal despite the current deficit. “The people of Arizona are very generous,” Johnson stated. “We’re hopeful we can make up that deficit here in the next few days.”

Carl Shelton: A Unique Volunteer Effort

Among the dedicated volunteers making a difference is Carl Shelton, a retiree and polio survivor who has devoted the last four years to serving as a bell ringer. Stationed outside a Fry’s Food Store in Surprise, Arizona, Shelton stands out in a Santa Claus costume, complete with a real white beard, and uses a decorated wheelchair enhanced with Christmas lights and festive music to attract attention.

Shelton’s commitment goes beyond merely ringing the bell; he actively engages with the community he cherishes. “I hear all kinds of stories about how the Salvation Army helped them back in their earlier days,” Shelton shared. “It makes you warm knowing that this is all going to help somebody that’s in need.”

In an effort to spread holiday cheer, Shelton distributes candy canes to children who contribute to his red kettle, describing this as an “added bonus” of his role. “The smiles you get from the kids, man, it’s worth it 100%,” he remarked, highlighting the joy that comes from connecting with the community.

Final Push for Donations

As the Red Kettle campaign wraps up, red kettles will remain at various storefronts until December 24. Donors who wish to support the cause can also make contributions online. The Salvation Army encourages individuals to consider donating during this critical time, as every contribution plays a vital role in meeting the organization’s holiday goals.

The efforts of volunteers like Carl Shelton not only aid in reaching financial targets but also embody the spirit of the season, showcasing the importance of community support during the holidays. With only days left in the campaign, the Salvation Army remains hopeful that Arizonans will step up to help those in need.
