Peace House Studio, a children’s clothing retailer, is set to expand its operations with a new physical storefront in Bath, UK. Owned by married couple Nick and Kate Bergmann, the store will open at 9 Centre Street in February 2024, transitioning from an online-only model that began during the pandemic in 2020.
Significant Expansion with New Storefront
The new location will provide 2,300 square feet of retail space, a significant increase from the previous 650 square feet they occupied above a garage. This expansion aligns with the Bergmanns’ vision of creating a more accessible shopping experience for customers, allowing them to engage with the clothing in person.
“I believe that clothing is very visceral, where you can feel the quality of it, rather than just seeing something online,” Nick Bergmann explained. The couple, who have three children, aims to produce clothing that is durable and can be passed down, promoting sustainability in fashion.
Support from Local Grants and Community
To support the build-out of the retail space and the purchase of industrial sewing machines, Peace House Studio will utilize a $12,500 Fit Up Grant from the city. Nick Bergmann noted the timing of the grant was fortuitous, as they were already in the process of securing additional funding for their growing business.
“The Bath Fit Up Grant was just a wonderful kind of happenstance that popped up just as we had basically signed our lease,” Nick Bergmann said.
Most of Peace House Studio’s sales have previously occurred through in-person makers markets. The Bergmanns believe that a dedicated storefront will enhance customer interaction and provide a platform for other local makers. “Once the storefront opens, other makers can use the space in Peace House Studio to sell alongside our clothing selection,” Nick added.
December 2023 marked a record month for online sales, attributed in part to a collaboration with artist Rachel Gloria Adams from Portland. The Bergmanns released her prints, which proved to be popular among customers. “We were just fortunate enough to work with her, and they have been flying off the shelves,” he said.
Although the primary focus will be on children’s clothing, the Bergmanns plan to diversify their offerings to include adult options, responding to customer demand. “That was another area where the customer led us,” Bergmann stated, reflecting on how the business has evolved to meet community needs.
Peace House Studio is committed to sustainability, with a focus on bright colors, bold patterns, and creating clothing that grows with families, thereby reducing waste. As they prepare for their grand opening, the Bergmanns are eager to establish Peace House Studio as a community hub for creativity and quality fashion.
