The Fort Morgan Mustangs boys basketball team has experienced a remarkable turnaround in the 2024-25 season, showcasing significant improvement in their performance. After a challenging start last year, the Mustangs have emerged victorious in five of their first six games, demonstrating strong teamwork and individual talent.
Following a narrow victory against Wiggins, where they won 44-43, the Mustangs faced their only defeat of the season against Forge Christian, losing 52-46. The team quickly rebounded with decisive wins against Ellicott (68-25), Bennett (67-30), Rocky Ford (80-30), and Brush (70-61), the latter secured after an intense overtime period.
Team Chemistry Drives Success
Coach David Marquez attributes much of this success to the chemistry the players have developed both on and off the court. He expressed that this year’s team exhibits a player-led dynamic, which often leads to greater success. “You can see by the interactions they have with each other that they’re just more locked in than the years in the past,” Marquez stated.
The team’s camaraderie is evident in their gameplay, which reflects a combination of strategic defense and effective offensive execution. Notably, three players have consistently led the scoring for the Mustangs. Senior small forward JJ Marquez tops the scoring charts with an average of 16 points per game, followed closely by senior Carlo Bassalle with 14.6 points, and junior shooting guard Cooper Chisum contributing 11.8 points per game.
Chisum’s contributions extend beyond scoring; he has also been recognized for his defensive skills. Coach Marquez emphasized the high basketball IQ among his players and their unselfish playstyle. “Our defense has picked up a notch. We have some good traps going,” he said, highlighting their effective 3-2 defensive strategy.
Heightened Defensive Strategy
The Mustangs’ defense has proven to be a game-changer this season. Coach Marquez noted that the team’s ability to adapt their defensive formations keeps opponents guessing. “Are they going to stay in the 3-2? Are we going to drop that guy down to play the 2-3 instead?” he asked, illustrating the tactical flexibility that has become a hallmark of their play.
The physical attributes of the team also contribute significantly to their success. With several taller players capable of jumping high, they have been able to convert high-percentage shots around the rim. The combination of skilled defense and effective offense has created a formidable presence on the court.
As the Mustangs continue their season, they currently hold a record of 5-1. They are set to return to action against Frontier Academy on January 6, 2025. With their current momentum, the Mustangs are poised for an exciting season ahead, showcasing the potential to build on their early successes.
