Rob Hobson, a registered nutritionist, made a significant dietary shift two years ago by eliminating ultra-processed foods (UPFs) from his meals. This decision stemmed from growing evidence linking UPFs to chronic health issues. Today, Hobson balances his commitment to whole foods with practical choices that fit his busy lifestyle.
Hobson’s initial three months without UPFs were rigorous. He focused on cooking from scratch, meal prepping, and avoiding additives present in many common foods. “I was like a vigilante,” he reflected in an interview with Business Insider. This strict approach, however, soon proved unsustainable due to the time and effort involved.
As of 2024, Hobson has adjusted his strategy to include what he considers healthier UPFs to save time while maintaining a balanced diet. “I still believe the first port of call is cooking everything as much as you can from scratch,” he stated. “But I’m not going to give myself a hard time about buying tomato sauce; I’ll just buy the best one I possibly can.”
Adapting Eating Habits for Convenience
Hobson’s approach to nutrition has evolved as the conversation around UPFs has changed. He emphasizes that some processed foods can offer nutritional benefits. For instance, fortified breakfast cereals provide essential vitamins, while flavored yogurts are good sources of calcium and protein. This shift in perspective allows Hobson to prioritize convenience without compromising on nutrition.
“With nutrition, it’s just making sure everything is on hand so that you have everything ready to go,” he explained. “I’m really busy at the moment. So for me, it’s finding the easiest way to do it.”
To streamline his meal preparation, Hobson has made specific changes. Rather than freezing meals, which he found tedious, he now batch cooks dishes that can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. This method allows him to enjoy meals like turkey chili in various ways throughout the week. “It saves me loads of time, and it’s just so nice when there’s stuff in the fridge that’s ready to just heat up in a pan,” he noted.
Utilizing Modern Cooking Techniques
In a bid to further reduce cooking time, Hobson invested in a pressure cooker. This device allows him to prepare one-pot meals, such as stews and curries, quickly and efficiently. “It’s much easier for me to batch cook with very little effort,” he said, highlighting the practicality of this cooking method.
Hobson’s journey illustrates a balanced approach to nutrition, integrating whole foods with occasional UPFs that align with his health goals. His experience resonates with many who seek to prioritize their health while navigating the demands of a busy life.
As he continues to refine his dietary habits, Hobson remains committed to finding a sustainable way to eat well without the pressure of perfection. His story serves as a reminder that healthful eating can be both practical and enjoyable.
