Shazier Bethea Powers Minersville to Victory with Stellar Performance

Minersville’s senior basketball star, Shazier Bethea, delivered an impressive performance on March 18, 2024, leading the Battlin’ Miners to a hard-fought 67-58 victory against Williams Valley. This win brings Minersville’s overall record to 8-1, with a league record of 5-1, showcasing the team’s strong start under first-year head coach Chris George.

Bethea’s contributions were pivotal during the game, where he scored a team-high 21 points. Coach George praised Bethea, stating, “Shazier is one of the best players in the league, and it’s easy to ride on his coattails, which is great for the rest of these guys.” His ability to remain calm under pressure has not only benefited his teammates but has also made him a consistent threat on the court, averaging close to a triple-double each game.

The Battlin’ Miners have relied heavily on Bethea’s skills, especially following the departure of senior Dante Carr, who left for the University of Central Florida on a football scholarship. Alongside Bethea, seniors Shane Fessler, Nolan Plesnarski, and Jacob Mealey have played crucial roles in the team’s success. Juniors Chase Zimerofsky and Jordan Bowers have also emerged as key players, helping to establish Minersville as a formidable contender this season.

Bethea’s All-Around Game Elevates Team Performance

Bethea’s influence extends beyond scoring. In the recent game against Williams Valley, he also recorded 10 rebounds, demonstrating his versatility and determination. “I can spread the floor out and get around defenders and to the basket or kick out to shooters,” he explained. “Everyone can dribble on the team, so you can’t guard all of us.” His ability to facilitate plays and create opportunities for teammates has helped maintain Minersville’s competitive edge.

Last season, Bethea averaged 15.4 points and 4.7 assists per game, leading the team to a Schuylkill League Championship appearance and a playoff run that ended in the District 11 3A Championship against Catasaqua. The Battlin’ Miners were subsequently eliminated in the first round of the PIAA 3A state playoffs, but Bethea’s contributions were critical in their journey.

Coach George emphasized the importance of winning games even when the team is not performing at its best. “If we want to go far this season, we have to win games when we don’t shoot well,” he remarked. The Battlin’ Miners have outscored their opponents by a total of 592-460 this season, averaging 66 points per game compared to their opponents’ 51.

Looking Ahead: Minersville’s Goals and Strategies

As the season progresses, Bethea and his teammates remain focused on improving their three-point shooting, a key area of emphasis for George’s coaching strategy. Bethea noted that close games, like the recent victory over Williams Valley, provide valuable experience that will be beneficial in the long run.

Currently, Minersville ranks second in the District 11 3A rankings, trailing only Notre Dame-Green Pond. The only undefeated teams in the Schuylkill League are Pottsville and Tri-Valley, while both Minersville and Schuylkill Haven maintain one loss in league play.

With Bethea leading the charge, the Battlin’ Miners aim to build on their strong start and make a significant impact this season. As they continue to develop their teamwork and skills, Minersville is poised for a promising campaign, with aspirations of advancing further in the playoffs and competing for titles.
