Researchers Uncover Up to 33 Human Senses, Challenging Tradition

Recent research is challenging the long-held belief that humans possess only five senses. A team of cognitive scientists and neuroscientists from the University of Glasgow suggests that humans may actually have as many as 33 distinct senses, reshaping our understanding of perception. This shift comes from the Rethinking the Senses project, which argues that the traditional five-sense model fails to account for various sensory experiences that are integral to human life.

Among the senses identified by researchers are balance, body position, internal body awareness, temperature, and pain. Neuroscientist Charles Spence, who leads the Crossmodal Research Laboratory at the University of Oxford, estimates that humans likely possess between 22 and 33 senses. His work emphasizes that perception is not a straightforward process; instead, sensory information continuously blends and interacts, influencing how we experience everything from food to emotions.

Redefining Taste and Sensation

Some researchers have even identified a sense of agency and a sense of ownership, which can be disrupted in stroke patients who experience detachment from their limbs despite intact sensation.

In one study, altering the sound of footsteps influenced participants’ perceptions of their weight while walking. Another experiment demonstrated that background aircraft noise could change the taste of food, enhancing savory flavors while dulling salty and sweet notes. This phenomenon may explain why tomato juice often tastes better when consumed at high altitudes.

Researchers assert that perception is a highly coordinated process. Vision can be affected by balance, while smell can alter our perception of texture. This interconnectedness of the senses remains active even in our technology-driven lives, where screen time often dominates our experiences.
