A Life of Service and Adventure

Born on March 14, 1931, in Ashland, Alabama, John was the youngest of ten siblings. He maintained close ties with his family throughout his life, often returning to his roots in Alabama. After graduating from Clay County High School in 1949, John unexpectedly enlisted in the Army Air Corps, now known as the Air Force. He was stationed at Amarillo Air Force Base, where he taught aircraft electronics and met Alice, who became his wife on December 27, 1952.

The couple had three children: John, Jr., Kathy, and Rebecca. They also welcomed ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with another expected in January 2026. After their marriage, John and Alice moved to Atlanta, where he furthered his education, earning an Associate’s degree at Southern Technical College and later a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at the age of 76.

John’s passion for flying began in Texas, where he took flying lessons. He earned his pilot’s license, which he held for 50 years, alongside various ratings including instrument, multiengine, and commercial. His first flight with Alice was a memorable moment, marking a new chapter in their adventurous life together.

Professional Accomplishments and Community Involvement

After his military service, John worked in the oil industry and later accepted a position in Bogotá, Colombia, where he and Alice made lifelong friends. Upon returning to the United States, they settled in Torrance, California. John embarked on a successful career in financial planning, founding his own investment and financial planning company, which he operated for over 50 years.

Throughout his life, John was deeply committed to community service. He was an active member of the South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club and served as its president. His involvement extended to Toastmasters International, The Arc South Bay, the Torrance YMCA, and the South Bay Association of Chambers of Commerce. He was also a secretary and lifetime member of the Harbor City/Harbor Gateway Chamber of Commerce.

John and Alice joined the First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach in 1961, where John contributed significantly, particularly in establishing the church’s endowment fund. His leadership and dedication made a lasting impact on the church community.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Alice, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A memorial service to honor his life and contributions will take place at 11:00 AM on January 10, 2026, at the First United Methodist Church, located at 243 S. Broadway, Redondo Beach, CA 90277.
