Fredrick Leon Jackson, a beloved figure in his community, passed away on December 19, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on March 31, 1938, in Osage, West Virginia, he was the son of the late James Jackson, Sr., and Golden Greene Jackson and was one of eleven siblings. His life journey was marked by resilience, love, and a deep commitment to family and community.

Fredrick was preceded in death by six sisters—Josephine Jackson Jennings, Sarah Jackson, Agnes Jackson Johnson-Simmons, Naomi Jackson Harris, Charlene Jackson Fambro, and Geraldine Jackson Gibson—as well as four brothers: William “Stoney” Jackson, Ellis Jackson, James Jackson, Jr., and George Jackson. He also mourned the loss of his daughter, Debra Denise Jones.

Early Life and Military Service

Fredrick attended Monongalia High School in Westover until the school integrated in 1954, at which point he transferred to University High School. After two years, he left school to join the United States Air Force, where he served at various bases in Texas. It was during this time that he met and married Fronia Mae Deal, with whom he had three children. The marriage did not endure, and Fredrick later returned to Morgantown, reuniting with his childhood sweetheart, Emma Lindsay. They married on May 29, 1966.

Fredrick was an active member of his local churches, having originally attended St. Stephens Baptist Church in Shriver before joining Mt. Hermon Baptist Church in Jerome Park. His dedication to the church culminated in his ordination as a deacon in February 1973, and he participated in the church choir. Known for his culinary skills, he often prepared meals for church events, especially roasts and other meats.

A Life of Passion and Community Engagement

A true “Jack-of-all-Trades,” Fredrick had a passion for home building and carpentry. He not only designed and renovated his own home but also crafted beds for himself and his son. He worked with several construction companies in Morgantown, contributing his skills to various projects.

His hobbies included fishing, hunting, cooking, and sewing, showcasing his diverse talents. Fredrick also played an active role in the community through the Mended Hearts Children’s Camp, where he positively impacted the lives of many.

Fredrick was known for his warm personality and his famous quote: “Strangers are friends he hadn’t met.” He had a knack for making people laugh and welcomed the neighborhood children into his life, treating them as part of his extended family.

Fredrick is survived by his wife, Emma, and their children: Lewis Lindsay, Frederick Leon Jackson, Jr., and Gladys Evette Jackson. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren—Frederick Leon, III, Fredericka Leona, Daxton, Denisha Latoya, Dennis Ray, Dorshelle, Maryion, and Talea—and nine great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Friends and family will gather on December 30, 2025, from 11:00 until the Homegoing Services at 12:00 noon in the Fred Jenkins Chapel of Prayer, officiated by Rev. Claudette Dale. Fredrick will be laid to rest at the Beverly Hills Cemetery, with honors conducted by the Westover VFW Post 9916 and the U.S. Air Force Joint Base Andrews.

Fredrick Leon Jackson’s legacy of love, community service, and family devotion will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
