UPDATE: In a significant move for the Penn State Nittany Lions, head coach Matt Campbell has confirmed the retention of special teams coordinator Justin Lustig. This decision comes as part of the team’s ongoing restructuring efforts following a successful season.
According to a report by Daniel Gallen of Lions 247, Lustig’s second season yielded impressive results, notably with kicker Ryan Barker. Barker achieved a remarkable 94.7% success rate, converting 18-of-19 field goal attempts, the highest in school history. His performance included 44-of-45 successful extra points, contributing to a stellar two-year record of 33-of-37 field goals under Lustig’s guidance.
Additionally, punter Gabe Nwosu set a school record with an average of 46.1 yards per punt, helping the Lions secure the 12th spot nationally in net punting. Nwosu’s outstanding performance earned him a place on the All-Big Ten third team, while Barker, long snapper Tyler Duzansky, and kick returner Nick Singleton received honorable mentions.
As Penn State solidifies its coaching staff, former defensive back D’Anton Lynn is poised to join as the new defensive coordinator. Lynn, who recently served as the defensive coordinator at USC, opted out of the Alamo Bowl after a mutual agreement with Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley, facilitating his transition to Penn State.
On the player front, key offensive linemen Anthony Donkoh and Cooper Cousins, along with tight end Andrew Rappleyea, have announced their commitment to remain with the team amid transfer portal speculation. Donkoh started in all but two games, while Cousins contributed in 12 games, making two starts. Rappleyea recorded 20 receptions for 180 yards and three touchdowns, including a pivotal score in the Pinstripe Bowl victory against Clemson.
However, as of Wednesday morning, nine Penn State players have indicated their intention to enter the transfer portal, including cornerbacks A.J. Harris and Elliot Washington II, defensive ends Chaz Coleman and Daniel Jennings, and others.
This latest development in Penn State’s football program highlights the ongoing changes and strategic decisions that will shape the team’s future. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for more updates as the transfer portal opens on January 5, 2024.
