Alex Kalkhofer has been elected to the Longmont City Council Ward 3 seat by acclamation, eliminating the need for a special election originally scheduled for March 3, 2024. Under Colorado law, such an election can be canceled if there is only one candidate for the position. Kalkhofer was the sole individual to submit the necessary paperwork, resulting in his automatic election without a contested vote.
Kalkhofer will serve the remainder of the term previously held by Susie Hidalgo-Fahring, who assumed the role of mayor following her election in November 2023. This term extends through December 7, 2027. He is set to be sworn in during the City Council meeting on January 13, 2024, and will be eligible to run for a full four-year term in December 2027.
Mayor Susie Hidalgo-Fahring expressed her satisfaction with the election outcome, stating, “We are pleased to have a candidate step forward to serve Ward 3. Alex’s commitment to representing our community will be valuable as we move forward with our city’s priorities.”
Kalkhofer had previously indicated his intention to run in the special election to fill the open seat. He participated in Longmont’s at-large City Council race last fall, where he received 14.6% of the vote, finishing behind newly elected Councilmember Crystal Prieto.
A resident of Ward 3 since 2008, Kalkhofer currently chairs the city’s Transportation Advisory Board. Upon learning of his election, he expressed gratitude to the community. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you for this incredible moment!” he wrote on his campaign page. “It’s your trust and your belief that made it possible.”
He emphasized his commitment to addressing key issues such as housing affordability, safer streets, and local business growth, stating, “I commit to listening intently, tackling housing affordability, safer streets and local business growth with the same energy. We did this together!”
