Steph Curry Honored with New Interchange Named After Him

In a moment of celebration and recognition, the community of Davidson, North Carolina, honored NBA star Steph Curry by renaming a section of highway—specifically, Exit 30 off I-77—after him. This event took place during halftime of a men’s basketball game at Davidson College on March 5, 2024. Surrounded by family, former teammates, and supporters, Curry reflected on his journey from college athlete to global basketball icon.

“The way I’m looking at it, anyone who has passed that interchange or passes that sign who has been a part of my journey, helped me get there, hopefully they feel a little bit of pride in that,” Curry shared following a game against the Charlotte Hornets. His humility shone through as he acknowledged the many individuals who contributed to his success.

A Celebrated Journey

Curry’s affiliation with Davidson College has significantly shaped his basketball career. He began his college journey at the institution, located just 20 minutes north of Charlotte, where he quickly garnered attention. As a freshman, he received All-Southern Conference honors, and by his sophomore year, he propelled the Wildcats to their first NCAA tournament in 2008, leading them to an unexpected Elite 8 run.

Under the guidance of coach Bob McKillop, Curry’s skills blossomed. In his final college season, he led the nation in scoring and was named an All-American, firmly positioning himself for the NBA draft, where he was selected by the Golden State Warriors.

“His fingerprints are all over Davidson College, not just Davidson basketball,” McKillop stated. “He is the most storied graduate of a school that’s been around for 150 years.”

Seventeen years after his departure, Curry continues to play an active role in promoting Davidson College. Earlier this year, he was appointed as the assistant general manager for both the men’s and women’s basketball programs, demonstrating his commitment to the school and its athletes. McKillop noted that Curry has never lost sight of his roots or the importance of gratitude.

Community and Legacy

Curry’s contributions to Davidson have not gone unnoticed. Shortly after leading the Warriors to their fourth championship title in 2022, the college retired his jersey as a testament to his impact. On the day of the honorary renaming, he was celebrated not just for his achievements, but for his lasting relationship with the institution.

During the ceremony, Douglas Hicks, president of Davidson College, expressed admiration for Curry, stating, “Everybody knows that the entrance to Davidson is Exit 30, and we hope that your heart will always lead you back to Davidson and Davidson College.” This sentiment resonated with the crowd, which included notable figures such as Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green.

Green remarked on the significance of the honor, saying, “People get, like interstates and exchanges and exits and highways named after them when they die, not when you’re living. That’s living legend status.”

Despite the accolades, Curry maintained a tone of humility. After reflecting on the day’s events, he humorously added, “Don’t call me, though, if you get a speeding ticket,” alluding to the new sign marking the interchange.

The renaming of Exit 30 to the Stephen Curry Interchange stands as a tribute to a player who has not only excelled on the court but has also remained committed to his community and alma mater. As he continues to inspire young athletes and promote the values of hard work and gratitude, Curry’s legacy at Davidson College is sure to endure.
