New Walnut Creek Restaurant Offers Unique Family Dining Experience

A new dining establishment, Ruby Lou’s, has opened in Walnut Creek, California, offering a unique blend of family-friendly activities and upscale adult dining. The venue aims to create an immersive experience that caters to both children and adults, making it a versatile spot for various occasions.

Inspired by Family and Imagination

The brainchild of Megan Abraham Benshalom, a seasoned mixologist with over 20 years of experience in high-end restaurants, Ruby Lou’s was inspired by her four-year-old daughter, Ruby Lou. Benshalom expressed that the name of the restaurant was a tribute to her daughter, who motivated her to create a space where families can enjoy quality time together.

“I have a 4-year-old daughter whose name is Ruby Lou, and she named the restaurant after herself,” said Benshalom. After working late hours as the general manager of the upscale View Lounge in the San Francisco Marriott Marquis, Benshalom felt she was missing out on precious moments with her daughter. The closure of local family-friendly venue Skipolini’s last May prompted her to take action, leading to the conception of Ruby Lou’s.

A Whimsical Atmosphere for All Ages

Ruby Lou’s is designed to engage the imagination of its visitors. The bar features stools shaped like Oreo cookies and ice cream cones, while candy-themed decorations provide a whimsical environment reminiscent of Roald Dahl’s classic stories.

Benshalom described her vision as creating “an immersive floral candy garden,” which aims to enchant both children and adults. The restaurant features a carefully curated menu that includes gourmet takes on classic comfort foods. Diners can enjoy dishes such as homemade potato chip nachos with slow-braised short ribs and Wagyu beef hot dogs served in pretzel buns.

For younger guests, Ruby Lou’s boasts an ice cream bar offering flavors like huckleberry, pistachio almond, and birthday cake. Children can indulge in the “yolo” sundae, which includes a scoop of each flavor.

Beyond the food and drink, the venue includes interactive games designed to foster family engagement. Children can play claw arcade games or board games like Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders, which are creatively integrated into the tables. Adults can join in the fun with larger games like KerPlunk, designed to encourage social interaction.

The restaurant is set to open its doors to the public in March 2024, with current operations focusing on private events. Ruby Lou’s will operate from 16:00 to 22:00 Wednesday through Friday, and from 12:00 to 22:00 on weekends, located at 1501 N. Broadway in Walnut Creek.

Benshalom encapsulates the essence of Ruby Lou’s with the phrase, “Family by day, fabulous by night,” promising a memorable experience for all who visit. With its imaginative design and diverse offerings, Ruby Lou’s aims to become a cherished destination for families and adults alike in Walnut Creek.
