Senator Tuberville Honors Colonel Downing as January Veteran

UPDATE: U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has just announced that Colonel Patrick Downing will be honored as the January “Veteran of the Month.” This recognition highlights Downing’s remarkable dedication to service and community following a distinguished military career.

Colonel Downing, a proud native of Mobile, Alabama, returned home after an impressive 36 years of military service. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at just 17 years old, and his journey took him to the elite Special Forces, where he served two tours in Vietnam. Reflecting on his experiences, Downing stated, “The military will take you all over the world, but Sweet Home Alabama has a way of bringing people back.”

After marrying his high school sweetheart Patricia at Fort Bragg, Downing faced life-threatening challenges upon arriving in Vietnam, including mortar attacks and threats against his unit. However, his resolve never wavered as he committed to his mission. Following his retirement in 1996, Downing and his wife made the decision to settle back in Alabama, marking the end of 19 moves throughout his military career.

In Mobile, Downing dedicated himself to education, serving over 20 years at the University of South Alabama. He directed one of the university’s satellite campuses for 15 years, contributing significantly to the local community until his retirement in 2015. The couple now enjoys family life as proud grandparents of 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Senator Tuberville emphasized the importance of recognizing veterans like Downing, stating, “After traveling far and wide to protect our freedoms, I am glad Pat planted his roots down in Mobile.” Constituents are encouraged to nominate veterans for future recognition. Nominations for the 2026 “Veteran of the Month” series can be submitted to Tuberville’s office via email at [email protected].
