Volunteers Rally to Rescue Hundreds of Rats from Long Island Home

A residential property in Rocky Point, Long Island, has been overrun by hundreds of rats, prompting urgent action from local animal rescue volunteers. The homeowner, a 48-year-old individual, has been arrested, leaving approximately 300 rats in dire need of care. Reports indicate that there could be as many as 500 domesticated rats within the home, with estimates suggesting that 100 to 200 are trapped within the walls.

Frankie Floridia, president of Strong Island Animal Rescue, described the situation as catastrophic. “It’s a disaster inside,” he stated. “It’s very hard to breathe. You need masks. You need gloves. It’s just a bad situation.” Volunteers have been working tirelessly to capture as many rats as possible, aiming to provide veterinary care to those in need.

Veterinary technician Kristin Stephens has been assisting in the rescue efforts and noted the alarming health conditions of the animals. “A lot of them are injured. Many have large wounds. We have a few that are going septic,” she explained. As of now, the volunteers have managed to contain around 150 rats, separating them by gender and health status for better treatment.

The homeowner faced sanitation violations prior to the arrest, which highlighted the severe neglect in the conditions within the property. Volunteers discovered rat poison in the basement, raising concerns about the health of the captured animals. “We have seen a couple that have had blood coming from their nose, which is what happens when you poison rats,” said Stephens.

The situation has drawn attention from local residents, many of whom were unaware of the extent of the problem. Neighbors reported no noticeable odor or signs of distress from the home, indicating that the situation was largely contained within the property.

In light of the urgent need for assistance, Strong Island Animal Rescue is seeking foster care volunteers and monetary donations to support the healthcare of the rescued rats. “It makes us sad but it also gives us a glimmer of hope that we know that we can get them to safety,” Floridia added.

As this rescue operation continues, the community remains hopeful for the recovery and rehabilitation of these neglected animals. The situation serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for vigilance in safeguarding animal welfare.
