Sky Greenlights ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ TV Series

Sky has officially announced the development of a new television series based on the acclaimed novel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. This eight-part series will be produced by Left Bank Pictures, the same team known for their work on The Crown and Dept Q. The adaptation aims to provide a “bold and contemporary reimagining” of Stieg Larsson’s work, updating the narrative while staying true to the characters and investigative spirit that define the Millennium novels.

The original Millennium novels have achieved remarkable success, with over 100 million copies sold globally. The first book, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, was previously adapted into a feature film in 2011, directed by David Fincher, and starred Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. This neo-noir thriller followed the story of disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the enigmatic hacker Lisbeth Salander as they investigated a decades-old disappearance.

As the new series emerges, it is expected to resonate with contemporary audiences, tackling themes that are increasingly relevant today. Although casting details have yet to be revealed, production is slated to begin in Lithuania in the spring of 2024.

The series will be written and executive produced by Steve Lightfoot, known for The Punisher and Behind Her Eyes, alongside Angela LaManna, who has worked on The Haunting of Bly Manor. Other executive producers include Andy Harries, Charlotte Moore, and John Phillips from Left Bank Pictures, as well as Sam Hoyle from Sky.

This highly anticipated series will be available on Sky across several European countries, including the U.K., Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Additionally, Sony Pictures Television is set to handle international distribution, with pre-sale initiatives already underway in the U.S.

With the success of the previous adaptations and the enduring popularity of Larsson’s novels, this new series is poised to attract both long-time fans and new viewers alike. As production begins, the anticipation surrounding this project continues to build, promising a fresh take on a beloved story.
