Liberty Pole Spirits, a distillery located in North Strabane, has achieved notable recognition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. The distillery was awarded first place in the rye whiskey category for its Old Monongahela Full Proof Rye Whiskey and secured second place in the flavored whiskey classification for its special edition spiced whiskey. This year marks the inaugural inclusion of distilled spirits in the competition, which runs through January 14, 2024, in Harrisburg.
The Pennsylvania Farm Show showcases a diverse range of agricultural products, animals, and local goods, from llamas to homemade treats. Jim Hough, who owns and operates Liberty Pole Spirits alongside his family, expressed pride in the achievements. “To be the best rye whiskey in Pennsylvania is pretty nice,” Hough stated, highlighting the significance of the accolade.
The spiced whiskey that earned second place was a seasonal offering, available exclusively during the holiday period. Hough noted that while Liberty Pole Spirits has participated in various competitions over the years, such events do not play a major role in their marketing strategy. “We’ve done some things in the past,” he remarked, suggesting that while they may consider entering more contests, their current distribution is limited to Pennsylvania. As a result, competitions with a national scope do not significantly impact their business.
Liberty Pole Spirits has a strong community presence, having previously been recognized as the U.S. Small Business Administration’s small business of the year in Western Pennsylvania. Hough’s journey into whiskey-making began as a hobby during his tenure in the finance industry. The distillery’s original location was on West Maiden Street in downtown Washington, but it has since relocated to Adios Drive in North Strabane, conveniently situated near the Hollywood Casino at the Meadows.
The local support for small businesses is something Hough deeply appreciates. He emphasized, “People appreciate small businesses, local businesses.” This sentiment resonates strongly within the community, as consumers increasingly seek out local products that reflect their regional heritage.
With its recent accolades at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, Liberty Pole Spirits continues to enhance its reputation as a producer of high-quality spirits, contributing to both the local economy and the broader appreciation of artisanal whiskey production. As the distillery looks to the future, it remains committed to delivering exceptional products that celebrate the spirit of Pennsylvania.
