Mavericks Secure First WDA Win, Defeating Patriots 39-26

The Dickinson Mavericks boys wrestling team achieved a significant milestone on January 15, 2026, by defeating the Bismarck Century Patriots 39-26 in their first Western Dakota Association (WDA) dual match of the season. The competition took place at Dickinson High School, marking an important moment for a team eager to establish itself in the conference.

Head coach Jeremiah Hayes emphasized the focus on fundamental wrestling techniques leading up to the match. “We’ve been hammering to wrestle with fundamentals this week and staying in positions throughout the whole dual,” he stated. The Mavericks demonstrated improved positional control during the competition, which ultimately contributed to their success on the mat.

With this victory, the Mavericks improved their dual meet record to 3-1. The match began positively for Dickinson, as their lower weight classes provided a strong start against the Patriots, who were noted for their depth in the heavyweight categories. Jacob Wolf and Max Glaser both secured technical falls at 107 and 114 pounds, respectively. Additionally, Jake Glaser recorded the fastest pin of the evening, concluding his match just 56 seconds into the first period, giving the Mavericks an early edge of 16-0.

The momentum gained from the lower weights was crucial. Hayes remarked on the talent present in these categories: “We got a lot of very talented wrestlers in our lower weights and a lot of kids that have put time in, and we like to show that off.” He highlighted the dedication of his wrestlers, particularly Wolf, who has benefited from strong practice partners throughout his development.

A standout match occurred at 133 pounds, featuring junior Wyatt Turner, ranked No. 2 in the state, who faced off against No. 3 Grady Iverson. Turner controlled the match, achieving a decisive 21-6 technical fall, which extended the Mavericks’ lead. This victory improved Turner’s season record to 21-8. Hayes praised Turner for his athleticism and noted the emphasis on fundamentals that has helped him excel.

Turner reflected on his performance, stating, “My classic fundamentals. They teach that all the time. In the room, that’s what we all work on.” His focus on maintaining a strong stance and consistent scoring opportunities was evident throughout the match.

The Mavericks’ success was a collective effort, with each wrestler contributing to the overall team score. Following this victory, the team looks forward to their next challenge. They are scheduled to compete in a Quad Meet in Watford City on January 20, where they will face Mandan, Williston, and Watford City.

As the season progresses, the Mavericks aim to build on this momentum and continue their push in the WDA standings.
