Blind Massage Therapist Offers Free Sessions to Support Single Parents

UPDATE: In a heartwarming initiative, Steven Stewart, a blind massage therapist, is offering free massages to five single parents in the Orland Park community. This generous giveaway, announced just last week, is set to make a significant impact as many families continue to struggle financially.

Stewart, who opened Unsighted Massage in September 2025 within Nicole Richards Hair Salon, is driven by his own experiences and a desire to give back. “I’m in a better place now than I was back then — physically, emotionally, mentally,” Stewart shared, reflecting on his journey since losing his sight eight years ago.

Why single parents? Stewart dedicates this initiative to his mother, who he credits with supporting him and his siblings throughout their upbringing. “A lot of my overhead is my time and my hands, and I don’t mind giving that to people,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to help those in need.

The massage giveaway comes at a crucial time, following reports that 2 million Illinois residents lost their SNAP benefits due to a federal government shutdown last month. Moved by these struggles, Stewart launched the initiative to provide relief to families facing food insecurity and financial hardships.

In an inspiring turn of events, local resident Tracy Beagarie connected with Stewart through social media and offered to create charcuterie boards for the selected single parents. “To see his post just kind of hit that heart string for me,” Beagarie said, highlighting her motivation to contribute anonymously without seeking recognition.

The response has exceeded expectations, with Stewart planning to support at least 10 single parents through this program. He noted that many of the stories shared on social media have deeply resonated with him, leading to emotional encounters during appointments. “I had one client who broke down in tears just because of how bad she was struggling,” he recounted.

Stewart recently reminded potential participants that only single parents should enter the giveaway, ensuring the help reaches those who truly need it. His efforts have garnered praise from Mary Lynn Fleck, owner of Nicole Richards Salon, who commended his dedication and impact on the community. “There are not many people who could have their sight taken away and turn around and give back as much as Steven has given back,” Fleck remarked.

With his training from Moraine Valley Community College’s massage therapy program, Stewart is not only building a business but also making a meaningful difference in the lives of those around him. As his initiative gains traction, community members are encouraged to share this uplifting story and support single parents in need.

As the demand for Stewart’s services grows, he remains focused on his mission to uplift others. “Whatever he wants, I fully support him. Anything we can do to help him, we’re all there,” Fleck added, highlighting the collaborative spirit within the salon.

For those interested in Stewart’s giveaway, details are available through his social media channels, where he continues to share updates on his journey and the lives he touches through his work.

The community is rallying behind this inspiring story of resilience and compassion, making it a perfect narrative for sharing and spreading hope during challenging times.
