Loved ones of Rick Garcia, a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in Chicago, gathered on January 14, 2023, to commemorate his life and legacy. The memorial service took place at Saint Mary of the Lake Catholic Church on the North Side of the city, drawing friends, family, and supporters who celebrated Garcia’s significant contributions to the community.
Garcia, who passed away on January 12 at the age of 69, was known for his relentless advocacy and pivotal role in advancing LGBTQ+ rights in Chicago. He was instrumental in the passage of the city’s human rights ordinance and the gay civil rights bill in 2005. His efforts laid the groundwork for similar legislation at both the county and state levels. Former president of Equality Illinois, Michael McHale, reflected on Garcia’s impactful career, stating, “I want them to remember him for who he was, which was a tenacious, never give up activist, who was fantastic with the press.”
Garcia’s advocacy extended beyond legislation. He was a devout Catholic who actively challenged the notion that religious beliefs should hinder support for LGBTQ+ rights. McHale recounted, “When people would use the excuse, ‘I can’t vote for this, I’m Catholic,’ Rick would say, ‘Well, I’m Catholic too. You can vote for this.'”
As friends shared their memories, it became clear that Garcia’s influence extended far beyond policy changes. Julio Rodriguez, co-founder and president of ALMA Chicago, described Garcia’s encouragement to others, saying, “He would always just say, ‘Girl, never let them keep you outside, because we all have a seat at the table, even if you have to be the one that drags it there.'”
Garcia’s best friend, Richard Streetman, expressed the personal impact Garcia had on his life, stating, “As a gay man, and as a friend, there’ll never be another like him, because he was built in a different era, and he made it possible for me to be who I am. And there’s a little piece of him in my heart forever.”
The service was a poignant reminder of Garcia’s legacy, as attendees reflected on a life dedicated to advocating for equality and justice. His commitment to fostering inclusivity and love will continue to inspire future generations in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
