Jim Rowley, the CEO of Crunch Fitness, maintains his fitness routine amid a demanding travel schedule by incorporating exercise and a morning protein shake into his day. Rowley emphasizes the importance of staying active and avoiding monotony, which has been key to his success in leading the company and maintaining his health.
Rowley’s day varies significantly based on his location. When he is in Manhattan, his routine differs from when he is at home in Lake Tahoe. He finds fulfillment in the diversity of his workday and actively engages with members at the company’s more than 500 gyms across the United States. Recently, Rowley has focused on how artificial intelligence can enhance both the member and team member experience, testing innovative ideas in the field.
“When I’m feeling like I’m in a rut from a strategy standpoint, creatively, I go to the gyms. I think all the answers are in the gyms,” Rowley stated. His commitment to being hands-on allows him to stay connected with his team and gain insight into what is working well and what needs improvement.
He typically rises between 5:45 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. and begins his day with a cup of coffee while catching up on business news and communicating with family. Rowley cherishes the time he spends with his granddaughter, born in June 2022, often checking in with her through texts or video calls before diving into a busy day filled with Zoom meetings and performance updates.
A key aspect of Rowley’s routine is ensuring he has a proper workspace while traveling. He notes the importance of having a desk or a sitting area to stay focused and physically active. He prefers to avoid hotel breakfasts, opting instead for a nutritious protein shake to kickstart his day.
Fitness as a Priority
Rowley firmly believes that fitness is essential for long-term health. At 58, he is focused on remaining happy, healthy, and mobile as he ages. Having a background as a United States Marine Corps veteran, Rowley has consistently prioritized physical fitness. He now finds that midday workouts work best for him, often taking a break around 1 p.m. for Pilates or weightlifting.
His approach to exercise has evolved over the years. Rowley explains, “I don’t lift for ego anymore. I rarely bench press… I do a lot more dumbbell workouts now, a lot more machine lifting.” He has embraced Pilates as a way to improve flexibility and strength, noting that it has made a significant positive impact on his physical well-being.
Rowley describes his Pilates journey, recalling how he initially felt out of place as one of the few men in the class. Over time, he has encouraged others to join him, fostering a community of male participants in Pilates, which he believes blends strength, mobility, and balance effectively.
Evenings of Relaxation and Reflection
After his workouts, Rowley returns to the office for more meetings and problem-solving before wrapping up his day. He aims to leave by 5:30 p.m. to enjoy a refreshing walk, especially during colder months. Dinner typically takes place around 6:30 p.m. with his wife, during which they bond over their shared interest in television series, particularly crime dramas and competition shows like “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race.”
Rowley enjoys unwinding with a good book before heading to bed by 11 p.m. His blend of work, exercise, and relaxation highlights a balanced lifestyle that not only supports his role as a CEO but also fosters personal well-being.
Through his commitment to fitness and family, Jim Rowley exemplifies how a dynamic routine can lead to success both personally and professionally, inspiring others to prioritize their health alongside their careers.
