Cincinnati Schools Set to Reopen Thursday After Winter Storm Closure

Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) will reopen on Thursday, January 29, 2024, following a three-day closure caused by a winter storm that impacted the region. The decision to resume operations came after thorough assessments of school buildings, transportation, and local conditions. All schools will follow a regular schedule, although there may be minor delays attributed to icy residential streets.

In a statement, CPS highlighted the importance of community involvement in ensuring student safety. The district serves more than 35,000 students, and Superintendent Shauna Murphy emphasized the need for residents to assist by clearing sidewalks and salting icy patches near bus stops. “We are eager to welcome our students back, and we need the community’s help to make their commute safer,” Murphy stated. “Please, if you are able, clear sidewalks and salt icy patches today and show the whole region that our community is Here For Kids.”

As students prepare to return to school, families are advised to allow extra travel time and to dress appropriately for the cold temperatures expected. The WCPO 9 First Warning Weather Team forecasts temperatures dropping below 0°C, with wind chill factors ranging from -5°C to -15°C in some areas.

CPS’s reopening comes as many other local institutions continue to announce closures and delays. The district has provided an online resource where families can find updated information about affected schools, churches, and organizations in the area.

Cincinnati Public Schools is committed to creating a safe environment for all students and is relying on community support as they transition back to in-person learning.
