URGENT UPDATE: A fast-moving storm is set to impact Rhode Island this afternoon, bringing a forecast of up to 2 inches of snow. The National Weather Service warns that snow will begin around Tuesday afternoon and continue into the evening, adding to the already significant snow totals across the state.
Residents in the northern two-thirds of Rhode Island should prepare for 1 to 2 inches of snow, while the southern regions are expected to see a mix of rain and less than an inch of snow. Although this storm isn’t expected to produce heavy snowfall, nearby areas in Massachusetts could receive up to 4 inches of snow, intensifying the winter conditions.
The ongoing cold weather has left approximately 10 inches of snow on the ground in the Providence area, following over 20 inches of snowfall in January and an additional 2.6 inches so far this month. February has been particularly frigid, with average temperatures hovering around 19.9 degrees, making it 10.5 degrees colder than normal.
Fortunately, the extreme cold is expected to ease this week. Today, Providence will see a high of 34 degrees with temperatures reaching between 35 and 36 degrees through Saturday. This slight warming trend may provide some relief, but residents should remain vigilant as forecasters are monitoring another potential coastal storm expected this weekend.
Stay tuned for the latest updates on this developing weather situation and prepare for changing conditions throughout Rhode Island.
