Ellinwood High School Seniors Shine in Spotlight Features

The Ellinwood High School (EHS) community is celebrating its seniors through a new initiative led by student Library Assistant Madison Dombroski. Each month, Dombroski will highlight different seniors, showcasing their achievements and aspirations in a column titled “Check It Out.” This month features two outstanding seniors: Phillip Penner and Adam Hayes.

Phillip Penner, a senior at EHS, is inspired by his family, including his mother, Kelli Penner, and father, Christopher Stromski. He emphasizes the transformative power of literature, recommending the Bible for its life-changing potential. Reflecting on resilience, Penner quotes Dolamar Cross: “Giving up on your goals because of one setback is like slashing all four of your tires because one is flat.”

In his interactions with peers, Penner has learned an important lesson: family extends beyond biological ties. His advice to incoming students is to prioritize their own life choices over others’ opinions. After graduation, Penner plans to attend trade school to become a certified electrician, with aspirations of eventually owning his own business. His positive outlook is a testament to his character as he embarks on this final chapter at EHS.

Adam Hayes, also a senior, comes from a large family including his parents, Glennda French and Jimmy Hayes, and siblings Jacob, Ethan, Zaid, and Tyler. With eight nieces and nephews, Hayes values family connections. He recommends the “I Survive” book series for its engaging stories and short format, appealing to young readers.

Hayes expresses his fondness for his favorite teacher, Mrs. Fischer, praising her engaging teaching style and the snacks she brings to class. He is currently enrolled in a plumbing class at Barton Community College, which he finds particularly enjoyable. Hayes encourages incoming students to take as many Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes as possible, emphasizing their practical benefits.

As these seniors approach graduation, the EHS community wishes them both a successful and fulfilling year ahead. Sheri Holmes, director of library and media services for the Ellinwood School and Community Libraries, oversees this initiative. This new spotlight initiative not only highlights the achievements of individual students but also fosters a sense of community and support among the senior class as they prepare for their future endeavors.
