Community Remembers Susanne Rhoads Stelzner, 66, for Grace and Humor

Susanne Rhoads Stelzner, a beloved resident of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff, passed away on February 4, 2026, after a lengthy and courageous battle with breast cancer. She was 66 years old and is remembered for her warmth, humor, and dedication to her family.

Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Susanne moved to Lake Forest with her family in 1960. She graduated from Lake Forest High School in 1977 and later earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Hillsdale College in Michigan in 1981. Her professional journey began in the marketing department of Jim Beam, but her true passion lay in interior design. Susanne worked with Showhomes in San Diego, California, where her keen eye for design and appreciation for beauty flourished.

Susanne was not just a talented professional; she was a devoted family member. She is survived by her husband, Bruce Stelzner, her son, Preston Hurthle, and her step-children, Ryan and Nick Stelzner. She was the daughter of Marion Rhoads and the late William S. Rhoads, as well as a sister to Carol Harrison, Richard Rhoads, and the late Kimberly Hite. As an aunt, she was cherished by her nieces and nephews, including Lindsay Dagiantis and Carter Harrison.

A Life Filled with Joy and Adventure

Susanne had a deep love for the beach, often finding solace and happiness near the water. Her passion for storytelling was evident in her love of films, and she possessed a vibrant sense of humor that endeared her to many. She and Bruce enjoyed traveling between their homes in Stuart, Florida, Tippecanoe, Indiana, and Lake Bluff, Illinois, exploring various destinations around the globe.

Friends and family describe Susanne as a classy woman with a warm heart, always making those around her feel welcome and valued. Her legacy of kindness and grace has left an indelible mark on the community.

While the family mourns the loss of Susanne, they find solace in knowing that she is now at peace and reunited with her sister and father in what they believe is God’s Kingdom.

Memorial Service Details

There will be no visitation prior to the memorial service, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. on February 28, 2026, at The Church of the Holy Spirit, located at 400 E. Westminster, Lake Forest, IL 60045. A reception will follow the service, and interment will be private.
