Among the notable premieres during Barbera’s leadership are films that have won prestigious Academy Awards, including Gravity (2013), Spotlight (2015), La La Land (2016), The Favourite (2018), and Joker (2019). Last year’s festival highlighted Barbera’s commitment to cinematic excellence, featuring a stellar lineup that included Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein with Jacob Elordi, Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine starring Dwayne Johnson, and Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt with Julia Roberts. Both Bugonia, starring Emma Stone, and Frankenstein are contenders for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars.

The Venice Film Festival’s announcement regarding Barbera’s contract renewal emphasized the achievements he has made in enhancing the festival’s reputation. The board acknowledged his success in discovering and promoting new talents on the international stage, as well as his efforts to advance the culture of cinema and expand audiences worldwide.
