The Good Hope Lady Raiders secured their second 4A State Championship in three years by defeating the Plainview Lady Bears 59-54 on March 15, 2024, at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. This victory marks a significant achievement for the team, ranked fourth in the state, as they overcame the top-ranked Plainview squad in a tightly contested match.
The Lady Raiders, known for their strong defensive strategy, showcased this philosophy throughout the game, holding Plainview to a shooting percentage of just 32.7% and forcing 12 turnovers. Their dominance in the paint was evident, as they outscored the Lady Bears 32-8 in that area. Good Hope head coach Justin Aby praised his team’s dedication and teamwork, stating, “This group of girls, I love them. I do. They battle, they play hard, they play the game the right way and I’m proud of them. Their hard work paid off.”
The game began with an impressive performance from Good Hope, who quickly established an early lead with an 11-0 run. Key contributions came from players such as Sophie Konrad, whose scoring abilities, alongside the strategic playmaking of Ella Gossett, set the tone for the match. Despite this, the Lady Bears demonstrated resilience, with guard Piper Anderson stepping up to hit three consecutive three-pointers, closing the first quarter with a narrow 15-14 deficit for Plainview.
As the second quarter unfolded, Good Hope’s defense tightened, allowing the Lady Bears to score only two field goals during the entire period. By halftime, the Raiders extended their lead to 24-19, driven by continued strong performances from Konrad and Ella Davis, who dominated the paint.
The game intensified in the third quarter, with both teams exchanging baskets. Following a series of scoring plays, including a driving layup from AnnaLee Shrader of Plainview, the game reached a critical point at 32-32. Davis responded with a remarkable sequence, scoring 11 consecutive points to give Good Hope a 41-32 advantage heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the momentum shifted back and forth, but Good Hope’s defense remained steadfast. With just four minutes left, Gossett made a crucial assist to Marshall, extending the lead to 46-38. Despite their efforts, Plainview continued to fight back, managing to keep the score close. Ultimately, it was Gossett’s composure at the free-throw line that sealed the victory, as she hit four consecutive free throws in the clutch moments of the game.
Reflecting on her performance, Gossett, a junior and member of the previous championship team, noted, “I’ve been here before. I know what the environment is like, how loud it is, and in that moment, everything just goes silent and I know I’ve got to make them. And that’s what I did.” She also credited her teammates and the previous players for pushing her to excel.
Davis led the Raiders with an impressive 18 points and five rebounds, while Lucie Adams contributed significantly with a double-double of 11 points and 17 rebounds. This championship win not only highlights the skill and dedication of the Good Hope Lady Raiders but also solidifies their position as a formidable force in Alabama high school basketball.
