UPDATE: The Plante brothers, Zam and Max, delivered an extraordinary performance, each scoring four points to propel the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) to a dominant 7-3 victory over Bemidji State during a nonconference matchup at Sanford Center on October 27, 2023.
In a thrilling start, the Bulldogs faced an early setback, falling behind 2-0 within the first 5 minutes of play. However, UMD quickly responded with three consecutive goals, showcasing their resilience and skill. Both Zam and Max Plante contributed significantly, helping to turn the tide in favor of the Bulldogs before the first intermission.
The evening also marked a career highlight for Jayson Shaugabay, who added four points of his own, including a goal and three assists. The Bulldogs’ sophomore goaltender, Adam Gajan, made crucial saves, finishing with 17 saves on 20 shots.
The action-packed game saw Max Plante score his first shorthanded goal as a Bulldog, demonstrating his prowess on the ice. Meanwhile, Zam Plante netted both of his goals on power plays, contributing to UMD’s improved power play performance, finishing 2-for-4 after struggling earlier this season.
Max Plante is now averaging 2.2 points per game this season, with a total of five goals and six assists in just five games. His brother Zam has also made his mark, tallying eight points from three goals and five assists. Shaugabay’s contributions have propelled him to nine points this season.
Defenseman Joey Pierce scored his second career goal, a significant milestone after having no goals in the first four games of the season. Freshman center Daniel Shlaine joined the scoring frenzy, netting his first collegiate goal, further extending UMD’s lead.
As the Bulldogs prepare for a rematch against the Beavers, scheduled for 6:07 p.m. on Saturday at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, fans are eager to see if the Plante brothers and Shaugabay can replicate their success.
