Sharks Suffer Costly Defeat to Mammoth, Remain Winless This Season

UPDATE: The San Jose Sharks faced a devastating loss against the Utah Mammoth on October 18, 2025, falling 6-3 at the Delta Center. A critical turnover by goalie Yaroslav Askarov led to a go-ahead goal by Liam O’Brien, sealing the Sharks’ fate and leaving them winless this season at 0-4-1.

In a match that saw the Sharks rally from a 2-0 deficit, the momentum shifted dramatically late in the second period. After impressive goals from Tyler Toffoli and Jeff Skinner, Askarov’s miscue allowed O’Brien to score his first goal since April 17, 2014, restoring the Mammoth’s lead and crushing the Sharks’ hopes for a comeback.

The Sharks struggled in the first period, falling behind as the Mammoth capitalized on their mistakes. With penalties from defensemen Nick Leddy and Dmitry Orlov, the Sharks found themselves in a precarious position. Nick Schmaltz scored on a 5-on-3 power play at 9:39, followed by another goal shortly after, leaving the Sharks trailing.

Despite a resilient performance in the second period, where Skinner and Toffoli scored just 1:50 apart, it was not enough. Askarov recorded 28 saves but could not overcome the errors that plagued the team throughout the match.

In the final period, Michael Carcone and Clayton Keller added insurance goals for Utah, as the Sharks struggled to regain control. Although Macklin Celebrini scored his first goal of the season with 3:09 left in the game, it was too little too late.

Looking ahead, the Sharks will face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday at SAP Center, where coach David Quinn is expected to start goalie Alex Nedeljkovic in hopes of breaking the winless streak. The Sharks are now under pressure to turn their season around as they remain the only team in the NHL without a victory.

Fans are eager to see if the Sharks can capitalize on this next opportunity to secure their first win of the season. The anticipation builds as the team’s struggles continue to unfold.
