Mary Ingleby, Beloved Educator and Advocate, Passes at 75

Mary Ruth Ingleby, a dedicated educator and advocate for children and animals, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 75 on October 10, 2025. A long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease marked her later years, yet she remained a vibrant presence in her community until her final days.

Born on June 22, 1950, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Mary was the third child of Don and Lavon Ingleby. She grew up in a large family that eventually included six children—two brothers and four sisters. A pivotal moment in her life occurred at the age of sixteen when she made the difficult decision to give up her first child for adoption. This experience profoundly influenced her passion for teaching and nurturing young minds.

After earning an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Cabrillo College, Mary dedicated many years to teaching children aged three to five. Her impact was particularly significant on her second son, Damian, who developed a lifelong love for reading and learning under her guidance.

A Lifelong Connection to Santa Cruz

Mary found her home in Santa Cruz, California, where she lived for 53 years. A lover of the ocean, she cherished the coastal community that became her sanctuary. Her compassion extended beyond the classroom; she was a staunch defender of animals and dedicated substantial time and resources to various causes that supported those in need.

Her vibrant spirit shone through her love for music. Mary was an active participant in several choirs and singing duos. Music was a constant presence in her life, creating a joyful atmosphere in her home.

A significant milestone in her life was the reunion with her first child, Bill. Their reconnection allowed them to share meaningful moments together, although their time was tragically cut short when Bill passed away in his mid-30s.

Mary is survived by her second son, Damian, and her younger sister, Colette. To honor her memory, a small memorial gathering is scheduled for October 18, 2025, at Seacliff State Beach in Santa Cruz, starting at 12:00 PM.
