Fort Collins, Colorado—Colorado State University (CSU) has announced the immediate departure of head football coach Jay Norvell following a disappointing homecoming loss to the University of Hawaii on October 21, 2023. The Rams fell 31-19, leaving them with a season record of 2-5. Defensive coordinator Tyson Summers will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Norvell, who took the helm in 2021, was brought on board to revitalize the football program. His tenure initially showed promise, culminating in a successful 2022 season that saw the Rams finish with an 8-5 record and a bowl appearance. However, the current season has not met expectations, prompting the university to seek new leadership as it prepares to join the Pac-12 Conference next year.
Athletic Director John Weber expressed his admiration for Norvell’s character and commitment to player development in a press release. “Jay is a leader of the highest character who cares deeply about developing his players as athletes, students, and young men,” Weber stated. He acknowledged the difficult nature of the decision but emphasized the need for a shift in leadership to compete effectively at the highest level.
Weber noted that while the program has made progress, a change was necessary to achieve the sustained excellence required for competing in the Pac-12. The university has officially initiated a nationwide search for Norvell’s permanent successor, aiming to ensure a smooth transition as they move into a new era of competition.
The decision to part ways with Norvell reflects a growing trend in college athletics, where programs are increasingly focused on immediate results and long-term success. As CSU enters this pivotal phase, the choice of its next head coach will play a crucial role in shaping the future of its football program.
With the interim coaching position now filled, the Rams will look to regroup and finish the season strong under Summers. The upcoming weeks will be critical as they navigate the challenges ahead while preparing for the significant transition to the Pac-12 Conference in 2024.
