Breckenridge Mourns Unexpected Passing of Beloved Local Hero

UPDATE: The Breckenridge community is in shock following the unexpected passing of local favorite, Peter Schwinn, who died peacefully on September 22, 2025. Known for his infectious personality and warmth, Pete’s sudden departure has left friends and family reeling.

Peter, a dedicated employee of Summit Net Trekker, was not just an IT consultant; he was a beloved figure who brought laughter and joy to those around him. A lifelong skier and Colorado native, he made his home in Breckenridge for the past 13 years, quickly becoming a local ambassador known for his charisma and storytelling prowess.

Friends and family remember Peter as a “nerd-about-town” who could lighten any situation with humor. He was known to yell encouragement from ski lifts, turning fallen snowboarders’ mishaps into moments of laughter. His legacy will be carried on by his parents, Bob and Sharman, who shared countless adventures with him, and his younger brother, Graham, who is left with hilarious memories and “permanent scars” from their childhood escapades.

Peter’s sister-in-law, Ashley, recalls their cherished moments, including his culinary skills that became a hallmark of his affection, leaving loved ones with “thickened waistlines and food-stained clothing.” His devotion extended to his nephew, Cooper, whom he adored despite never being a “qualified babysitter.”

In a deeply moving tribute, Meredith Graham, his partner and fellow Colorado native, expressed that Breckenridge will always hold a special place in her heart, as it was the backdrop for their love story and happiest moments.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Peter’s life at a memorial service on Monday, October 27, at 1:00 PM at Cherry Hills Community Church in Highlands Ranch. A gathering for sharing stories and toasts will take place on November 16, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Michael’s Italian Restaurant in Breckenridge.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Unsheltered in Summit at www.UnshelteredSummit.org. Those wishing to honor Peter are encouraged to share stories at [email protected], a testament to his legacy as a storyteller.

As the community comes together to mourn this vibrant soul, they are reminded to appreciate the beauty of life, laugh heartily, and perhaps, take a moment to unplug their devices—echoing Peter’s humor and wisdom as a long-time IT professional.

For now, the Breckenridge community reflects on the incredible impact of a man whose laughter, kindness, and storytelling will be sorely missed.
