UPDATE: Santa Cruz High’s football team has clinched the Santa Lucia Division title and a spot in the Central Coast Section playoffs following a decisive 38-14 victory over crosstown rival Harbor just hours ago. This marks a stunning turnaround for the Cardinals, who were winless just two years ago.
In a thrilling matchup that showcased their offensive prowess, the Cardinals racked up 351 yards on offense, dominating the game and celebrating their senior night in style. With this win, Santa Cruz improves to 6-2 overall and 5-0 in league play, securing their first league title since 2021.
“I’m just happy for the guys,” exclaimed second-year head coach Sergio Escobar, reflecting on the team’s significant progress from last season’s 2-8 record. “It’s hard not to smile when you improve that much in the time we’ve passed.”
The Cardinals set the tone early, scoring on their first offensive series with a 37-yard field goal from Anderson Hernandez. They extended their lead significantly in the second quarter, highlighted by two touchdown receptions from Rocco Marini, who scored on passes of 33 and 28 yards.
“This is amazing,” said Marini, who noted the rivalry’s significance. “They were talking about it. They were saying this is their Super Bowl, and we just came and beat them.”
In a strong showing, running back Angelo Meyer led the Cardinals with 116 rushing yards on just 11 carries, including a spectacular 47-yard touchdown run. The Cardinals maintained control throughout, despite a strong second-half effort from Harbor.
The Pirates, now struggling with a 0-8 record, managed to find their rhythm in the second half, with quarterback Andres Martinez leading a late-game touchdown drive. However, their efforts were not enough to overcome the early deficit.
“I’m proud of the effort,” said Harbor’s coach James Gaynor Jr.. “To see the effort get back in the second half was satisfying to see because there was fighting.”
As the Cardinals gear up for their final regular-season game against Gonzales on November 7 at 7:30 PM, they remain poised for a promising playoff run, regardless of the outcome. Even if second-place Pajaro Valley wins their last two games, Santa Cruz holds the tiebreaker after their earlier victory.
The emotional impact of the game was palpable, especially for the Cardinals’ quarterback, Neven Ristic, who wore jersey number 25 in memory of his late teammate, Kalden Tsering. Ristic contributed significantly to the victory, scoring a rushing touchdown and leading his team with determination.
As the Cardinals celebrate this monumental achievement, they are also focused on what lies ahead. The upcoming showdown against Gonzales will be pivotal, and fans are eager to see how far this revitalized team can go as they aim for championship glory.
Stay tuned for updates on the Central Coast Section playoffs as Santa Cruz looks to build on their remarkable comeback season.
