Advocacy Specialist Jeremy Daffern to Present on ‘Listening Differently’

UPDATE: Advocacy specialist Jeremy Daffern is set to present an urgent and inspiring program titled “Listening Differently” on October 28, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kanter Student Center’s Frey Conference Suite in Wayne, Nebraska. This free event, which opens its doors at 5:30 p.m., promises to engage attendees in a profound conversation on understanding the experiences of those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Daffern, who works with the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, emphasizes the importance of empathy and connection. “Being deaf or hard of hearing is an experience I can never completely understand,” Daffern stated. He aims to foster a deeper understanding through shared experiences, noting that “learning from people who have successfully navigated an increasingly complex world that is designed for people who do hear can help us ‘walk a while’ side by side.”

As an alumnus of Gallaudet University with extensive international development experience, Daffern will share his personal journey of resilience and hope in an often challenging environment. He will be joined by ASL interpreter Meghann Cassidy, facilitating a dialogue that empowers participants to engage meaningfully with the deaf community.

The program will conclude with a unique opportunity to “listen differently” to members of the Wayne State Department of Music, adding a creative dimension to the evening. This initiative is sponsored by Wayne State public and global health honors students and the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, highlighting the collaborative effort to promote awareness and understanding.

Attendees can expect to leave with valuable resources and insights into the challenges faced by the deaf and hard of hearing community. The event is not only informative but also aims to build stronger connections among neighbors, fostering a more inclusive society.

For those interested in attending, the event is free and open to the public, with food provided. Don’t miss this chance to engage with vital issues affecting the community. For further information, contact Barbara Engebretsen at Wayne State via 402-375-7044 or [email protected].
