Jets Legend Nick Mangold Passes Away at 41 After Health Struggles

Nick Mangold, a celebrated former center for the New York Jets, passed away on Saturday night due to complications arising from kidney disease. He was 41 years old. Mangold had been open about his health challenges on social media, recently revealing his need for a kidney transplant.

Born in Westerville, Ohio, Mangold’s football journey began at Ohio State University, where he played as a standout offensive lineman. His impressive college career included being named All-Big Ten twice and contributing to the team’s victory in the 2002 National Championship. His performance led to his selection by the Jets as the 29th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft.

During his 11 seasons with the Jets, Mangold became a fan favorite, known for his exceptional work ethic and distinctive long hair. He earned three All-Pro selections, including First-team All-Pro honors in both 2009 and 2010. Under his protection, the Jets ranked in the top 10 for rushing yards six times, leading the league in 2009. Mangold was instrumental in the Jets’ runs to the AFC Championship game in both 2010 and 2011.

A Legacy of Leadership and Loyalty

Jets owner Woody Johnson expressed deep sorrow over Mangold’s passing, highlighting his significance both on and off the field. Johnson stated, “Nick was more than a legendary center. He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football.” He also noted Mangold’s warmth and loyalty, emphasizing that he would always remain a cherished member of the Jets family.

In 2022, Mangold was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor, a testament to his lasting impact on the organization and its fans. Just last week, he was named among the 52 Modern-Era players who advanced in the selection process for the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class, further solidifying his legacy in the sport.

Mangold is survived by his wife, Jenny, and their four children: Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte. Johnson concluded his statement by extending heartfelt condolences to Mangold’s family and friends, saying, “On behalf of the entire Johnson family and the New York Jets organization, we offer our sincere condolences… Nick Mangold will forever be a Jet.”

Mangold’s passing marks a significant loss for the Jets community and the wider football world. His contributions to the game and the lives he touched will be remembered for years to come.
