UPDATE: Furloughed federal workers in Maryland can now access free meals as restaurants step up to support those affected by the ongoing government shutdown. With the shutdown nearing a month, approximately 230,000 federal employees in Maryland are facing increasing food insecurity, making these initiatives critical.
As of now, November 1 marks a significant date, as SNAP benefits—food assistance for over 40 million Americans—will not be issued, intensifying the need for immediate relief. Maryland restaurants are responding with offers tailored specifically for furloughed workers.
At Blowfish Poke in Clarksville and Marriottsville, any federal employee can receive a free bowl of chicken, crab salad, or tofu until the shutdown ends. Owner Jennie Kwon emphasized her commitment to the community: “People who are furloughed … they really don’t know where their next meal could be coming from.”
Similarly, Ekiben, with locations in Fells Point, Hampden, and South Baltimore, is offering free meals “no questions asked,” according to co-founder Ephrem Abebe. “We think it’s important to help them out in their time of need,” added co-founder Steve Chu.
In Rockville, Rasa is providing a “shutdown bowl” for just $10 at all locations, allowing furloughed workers to choose between chicken and vegetarian options. Co-founder Sahil Rahman stated, “We’re going to be looking out for our community.”
The Eataliano Market and Deli in Columbia is offering a 20% discount on meals for furloughed workers who present their government ID. The restaurant shared on Facebook, “When times get tough, community matters most.”
At honeygrow, which has 14 locations across Maryland, federal employees can enjoy a 20% discount on their meals by showing their government ID. “Politics might be sticky — your noodz shouldn’t be,” they posted in an October update.
Finally, Thompson Restaurants, which operates over 70 locations in the DMV area, is also providing 20% off for federal workers. They expressed their support on Instagram, stating, “This one is for you Government Employees, we are here to support you during this time.”
In addition to these restaurant offers, emergency food resources are available across Baltimore. The Bmore Community Food Network maintains 17 fridges filled with food throughout the city, and there are 66 locations providing community resources to combat food insecurity.
As the government shutdown persists, local businesses continue to rally in support of federal workers. The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated, as many struggle to secure basic necessities.
