Authorities confirm the incident occurred at 11:11 p.m. on October 27, 2023, when the man, a passenger in a vehicle, accidentally discharged his firearm while unloading it.

According to a release from Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs, the man exited the vehicle on Hales Road, north of Birchmont Beach Road. As he attempted to unload the firearm, it unexpectedly fired, injuring his leg. The driver swiftly notified emergency services and began transporting the victim toward the Cass Lake Indian Health Service.

Emergency responders quickly intercepted the vehicle on Mission Road SE, providing immediate medical assistance to the injured man, who indicated the shooting was accidental. He was subsequently transported to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center for treatment.
