The American Cancer Society celebrated its annual Bark for Life “Howl-O-Ween” on October 26, 2025, at the Canyon Country Community Center in Santa Clarita, California. The event featured dogs donned in festive Halloween costumes, families enjoying activities, and booths from local shelters and pet-related resources.
Event chair, Brad Peach, explained that the Howl-O-Ween celebration was initiated as a companion event to the society’s main fundraiser, the “Relay for Life,” which does not permit dogs due to health concerns for patients undergoing treatment. Peach emphasized the significance of dogs in the lives of those affected by cancer, stating, “We recognize dogs as their caregivers and as the overall wellbeing that they bring to people.”
Attendees were treated to an array of activities, including costume contests and play areas for children and pets alike. Peach noted that pets provide invaluable emotional support during tough times. He remarked, “A dog’s love is unconditional. They don’t care if you haven’t combed your hair… It’s just absolute unconditional love.”
The event drew a diverse crowd, including families and animal lovers eager to engage with the community. One attendee, Molly Avanessian, was seen interacting with a three-year-old dog named Kibbles, illustrating the heartwarming connections formed at the event.
Community Engagement and Awareness
The Bark for Life event served not only as a fundraiser but also as an opportunity for community education and support. Emery Nochez, who attended to support a friend, expressed the importance of such gatherings. “I think people don’t realize how many options they have until they go to an event like this,” she said. Nochez highlighted the value of connecting with others who understand the challenges faced by cancer patients and their families.
Additionally, volunteers like Sam Di Santo underscored the dual mission of raising awareness about cancer’s impact on both humans and their canine companions. “Dogs are cancer survivors, and they are one of the biggest caregivers that a person can have in their life,” Di Santo stated. He emphasized the motivation and companionship dogs provide, which can be crucial for individuals navigating their cancer journeys.
The event featured numerous booths providing information on various resources, including adoption opportunities and cancer support services. Attendees enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere, with many showcasing their pets in creative costumes, further enhancing the sense of community spirit.
The Joy of Celebration
The Howl-O-Ween celebration was not just about fundraising; it was a chance for families to come together and enjoy the simple joys that pets bring. Lisa Henderson and her family dressed as characters from the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” showcasing their playful spirit. Many attendees echoed the sentiment that such events are essential for community bonding and support.
Di Santo expressed admiration for the community support shown at the event. “I love this event every year. I think it’s so important for people to show up and I love seeing people support the American Cancer Society,” he said.
Overall, the Bark for Life “Howl-O-Ween” celebration proved to be a resounding success, blending fun, community engagement, and awareness of cancer’s impact in a festive setting. As families and their furry friends celebrated together, the event highlighted the essential role of pets in providing love and support during challenging times.
