Second Driver Dies in Violent San Jose DUI Crash; Investigation Ongoing

URGENT UPDATE: A second driver has died from injuries sustained in a violent head-on crash in San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood, raising serious concerns about DUI involvement. The crash, which initially killed 74-year-old Ellen Jo Orcutt, occurred on July 15, 2023, around 2:35 PM.

According to San Jose police, the incident unfolded when Christian Herbert Hygelund, an 81-year-old resident of Los Gatos, was driving a white 2018 GMC Yukon eastbound on Foxworthy Avenue. In an attempt to overtake a green 2018 Subaru Forester, Hygelund collided with the Subaru, sending his vehicle into oncoming traffic where it crashed head-on into a blue 2012 Honda CR-V.

Orcutt, who was driving the Honda, tragically died at the scene. Police confirmed that Hygelund was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and was listed in critical condition until he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. Investigators have now found evidence suggesting Hygelund was under the influence of alcohol during the fatal incident.

This devastating crash marks the 31st and 32nd traffic deaths in San Jose for the year, highlighting a troubling trend as the city recorded 44 traffic fatalities at this same point in 2024. The community is mourning the loss of Orcutt, who was known for her dedication to helping those in need. A GoFundMe created by her daughter emphasizes her lifelong commitment to serving the poor and unhoused in Santa Clara County.

The fundraising page states, “As I attempt to pick up the pieces, I am currently faced with the insurmountable task of honoring my mother who was truly cherished by all who knew her.” Contributions raised will support charities and organizations that were close to Orcutt’s heart.

Police urge anyone with information regarding this tragic collision to contact Detective Tori DelliCarpini at the SJPD traffic investigations unit by calling 408-277-4654 or via email at [email protected].
