The No. 13 Michigan women’s basketball team is gearing up for the 2025-26 season with a stronger roster than the previous year. Following a tumultuous offseason that saw nine players either leave or enter the transfer portal, the Wolverines are now positioned for a fresh start. This season, the team welcomes back a solid core of returning players, including sophomore guards Olivia Olson, Syla Swords, and Mila Holloway, alongside seasoned leaders such as senior forward Alyssa Crockett and junior guard Macy Brown.
Michigan finished last season ranked 22nd nationally according to Bart Torvik and is projected to achieve an 11th place ranking in the upcoming preseason polls. The team is anticipated to rank 16th in offensive performance and 14th defensively. Head coach Kim Barnes Arico expressed optimism about the current roster during Michigan Media Day. “Going into the year, there seems like there’s a lot of buzz,” she noted. “We have three starters returning from last year. Coming into the season (last year), there was a lot of unknown. We only had four players returning in the entire program. So this year, it is a little bit different. They have worked incredibly hard in the offseason.”
Returning Talent and New Additions
The Wolverines are looking to build on last season’s foundation with the addition of two transfers and three freshmen. The returning trio of Olson, Swords, and Holloway, who made a significant impact as freshmen, is expected to take on greater leadership roles. Olson was recognized as the Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year and earned spots on both the All-Big Ten Freshman Team and the All-Big Ten Second Team. Swords also distinguished herself, making the All-Big Ten Freshman and Second Team, as well as the All-Big Ten Tournament Team. Holloway received honorable mention accolades from the All-Big Ten selections.
Barnes Arico emphasized the importance of the trio’s chemistry, which was strengthened over the summer as they participated in international play. Both Holloway and Swords represented Canada at the U19 World Cup in Czechia, where they honed their skills and deepened their bond. “Syla lights up every room she steps in,” Holloway remarked, highlighting the support she receives from her teammate. “You can depend on her for anything. She guards the opposing team’s best player. She’s going to knock down every shot. She’s going to get in and get the defensive boards, loose balls, everything.”
Setting Goals for the Season
The leadership dynamics are crucial for success as the Wolverines aim to enhance their performance in the highly competitive Big Ten Conference. With Olson leading the team in points last season, Swords dominating rebounds, and Holloway facilitating assists, their individual strengths must coalesce for the team to thrive. As they prepare for the upcoming season, the trio is focused on developing their roles and contributing to the team’s success.
Barnes Arico’s excitement about the returning players and new additions signifies a renewed commitment to the program’s success. As the Wolverines navigate through the preseason and into the competitive landscape of the Big Ten, the emphasis will be on leveraging their experience and fostering a winning culture. With a solid foundation in place, the Michigan women’s basketball team is poised to make an impactful run in the 2025-26 season.
