URGENT UPDATE: Dave Kirk has been named the new president of the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce, effective December 8, 2023. This announcement comes as the Chamber prepares for a new era following the tenure of Candance Castlen Brake, who has led the organization since March 2015.
Kirk, a native of Owensboro and the destination management director for the Owensboro-Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau since 2018, expressed excitement about his new role. “It’s an incredibly important position,” he stated, adding, “I’m honored to be selected.” Kirk aims to enhance the Chamber’s outreach and membership, with a goal of surpassing 1,000 members soon after he takes office.
The selection process was competitive, with the Chamber receiving 70 applications nationwide. Olga McKissic, board chairwoman, confirmed that Kirk was the unanimous choice among both the selection committee and the board of directors. “We realized that he stood out above all the rest,” she noted. Kirk’s previous involvement with the Chamber and his deep understanding of the local community were key factors in his selection.
In comments reflecting on his predecessor’s impact, Kirk said, “Candance has set the bar very high. They’ve done incredible work.” His vision includes listening to both members and nonmembers to better serve the community’s needs. The Chamber currently boasts 988 members, the highest in over a decade, which Kirk aims to increase.
Kirk, a graduate of Owensboro High School with degrees in journalism and communications from the University of Kentucky, has a rich history in community engagement. He previously served as a public information officer for Owensboro Public Schools and has been actively involved in various Chamber initiatives. His leadership in the Chamber Young Professionals group saw membership grow from eight to over 150.
As Kirk prepares to lead the Chamber, he emphasizes collaboration with the Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corporation and Visit Owensboro to drive economic growth. “The future looks bright for Owensboro,” he stated, highlighting the importance of a united community approach.
With his wife, Jessica, also a community leader, Kirk is committed to fostering a thriving environment for businesses and residents alike. As he steps into this pivotal role, the Chamber and the community look forward to the energy and vision he will bring to Owensboro.
Stay tuned for updates on Kirk’s initiatives and the Chamber’s developments as they unfold in the coming months.
