UPDATE: Upper Darby Police Lieutenant Lania Stevens received the prestigious Governor’s Keystone Award today, honoring her significant contributions to the community. The ceremony, held at the newly refurbished Governors Mansion, marked the first official event since an arson attack in April.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro presented the award to Stevens, one of only eight individuals recognized for their impactful community service. “You are the people inspiring fellow Pennsylvanians,” Shapiro stated during the ceremony. Stevens is not only a trailblazer as the first Black female lieutenant in Upper Darby’s history but also a dedicated advocate for community engagement.
The event featured former Philadelphia 76ers broadcaster Marc Zumoff as emcee, who praised Stevens for her role in bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community. “It is tough work building bridges between a community and its police force, but this woman does that, while at the same time making history,” Zumoff remarked.
Stevens, who is also the vice president of the Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County, actively mentors local youth through the department’s Teens and Police Service (TAPS Program). This initiative aims to foster better relations between law enforcement and young people, enhancing community trust.
Governor Shapiro emphasized the significance of holding the award ceremony at the Governors Mansion, calling it “the people’s house.” He reflected on the vision of William Penn for a community rooted in free expression and tolerance. “You are the builders who do this every day,” Shapiro added, highlighting the vital role of community leaders like Stevens.
Upper Darby Mayor Ed Brown expressed pride in Stevens’ recognition. “It is an honor to see her receive an accolade that is only given to 17 recipients statewide,” he stated. Brown noted Stevens’ leadership in the TAPS program and her pioneering role in the police department.
Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt echoed these sentiments, stating, “Lt. Stevens’ recognition by Gov. Shapiro is a tremendous honor and a reflection of her dedication, professionalism, and commitment to the people and community of Upper Darby.” He emphasized that this award also highlights the hard work and high standards of the entire police department.
As this story develops, Lt. Lania Stevens stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for communities across Pennsylvania. Her contributions underscore the importance of dedicated public service and community engagement in building a better future for all.
This recognition of Lt. Stevens not only elevates her status but also serves as a call to action for others to engage with and uplift their communities.
